As the community grew, Syria Data Science began to look beyond individual professionals toward the organizations shaping programs on the ground. A recurring insight emerged: many Syrian NGOs were doing important work, but without structured data systems to properly measure, manage, and communicate their impact.
In response, Syria Data Science expanded its focus to capacity building for NGOs, with the aim of introducing a practical, data-driven approach to program design and evaluation. The objective was not technical complexity, but clarity—helping organizations collect the right data, manage it consistently, and turn it into evidence that supports better decisions and stronger accountability.
This led to the delivery of a tailored workshop on Data Collection, Management, and Analysis for NGOs, including a customized session for a project implemented by RECO, a growing organization working in the climate and environmental space. The training was designed specifically for the NGO context, addressing real constraints such as limited resources, field-based data collection, and reporting requirements.
Rather than offering generic theory, the workshop provided a basic but robust package: how to design simple data collection tools, ensure data quality, organize datasets, and extract meaningful insights that reflect actual impact. Participants worked through examples directly linked to their projects, making the learning immediately applicable.
This effort reflects Syria Data Science’s broader commitment: sharing knowledge beyond the data community and strengthening the wider ecosystem. By supporting NGOs in adopting evidence-based metrics and data-informed programming, the initiative contributes to more credible, measurable, and effective interventions—where impact is not assumed, but demonstrated.
